PostPosted: Tue Nov 04, 2008 11:01 pm    Post subject: Boot sale bargains. Reply with quote

Nowadays I tend to frequent various auctions and car boot sales looking for bargains which I try to sell on later at a profit.

This all started about 10 years ago when I decided to go to the Ingleston car boot sale (now sadly defunct) one Sunday morning just for somethiong to do on a normally boring Sunday.
I raked around a little, but after a while I bought a brass ships clock for 50p without thinking it might be of any interest to anyone else but myself.
Less than a year later I sold it for £40 and that got me hooked.

I now dabble in car boot sales and find it great fun, not to say somewhat sometimes rewarding, and a great way to meet like minded folk such as myself.

Anyway! The whole point of this thread is to ask you all if you have ever managed to acquire anything, whether it's through boot sales or otherwise of any satisfying value or not.

We've all seen Flog it, or the Antiques Roadshow, but what is your own little gem?

I used to go to them Allan, but I always look at some of the stuff on sale and think "Why do they bother dragging all that stuff here instead of the tip?"
Not into buying old junk, even if it might make money.

Dealers are on the ball up here, by the time they get round there is no bargains left

I frequently buy and sell at the Kildean boot sale that is situated at the cattle market in the Raploch in Stirling which is on every Sunday and is open around 6.30 am until 1 pm.

Depending on the weather there can be as many as 200+ booter's, although in rotten weather you can occupy the many cattle stalls which has covering overhead although that is not desirable to me anyway.

Costs per stall starts at £10 per car depending on how much vehicle space is taken up by tables etc.

It can be rewarding though as long as you wary of the "locusts" as I call them, that gather around the unwary first timers trying to steal an underpriced item.
Perhaps I'm one of those types also, and for that I apologise, although I am one of those who appear just after those types have moved on to another car load of stuff.
Direction's?
Edinburgh M9 to Stirling, then left A84 Safari park on to roundabout, then A84 right to Stirling then next roundabout left dual carriageway next 1st left into a seemigly old defunct shopping area behind which is the cattle market/boot sale area.

Bring much gold, diamond's and as many precious objects you have got, but don't offer them to those locusts, just say to them that I want Allan first, and then tell me you first read about it all on the freetalk Scotland boards.

We might have a bit of a blether for a while.
I will make you an offer for your stuff which is fair, I do not steal.

Hope this elongated thread is of some use to some or perhaps many.

Perhaps with hindsight and also your dagger-like comment, I should've said; " Bathgate's car boot sale area is claustrophobic and crap."
Thanks for picking that up Woody, or not!

With heartfelt apologies to all Bathgateonian's, or whatever's the term is for, well - "Bathgateonian's."

Kinross is still on these days, every Saturday for boot sales and Sunday's for market sales.
It has slowed down just lately, but will pick up again in the better weather for sure.

Hiya Sid, do you have any more info about the times these boot sales start at and of course finish, am and pm?
I might try looking there next year.

It usually starts at around 7 am till around 3ish,thing is,when you go that early then the hawkers are out in force trying to get a few bargains of you,so to speak.

It's a tenner for each car and it can get really busy at times.

Sid, you are so right about the lack of posters here. I try in my own way to contribute often, but somehow I feel that others have more important issues these days sadly.

Understandably Allan, but if you look in the members section you will see that we have 80 folk on here yet 22 have yet to post.

It may be a good idea to post the FTS link on other boards so that others can pop in for a wee look, and if they like what they see,all the better.

The wee pipe band drummer will stay a while Waco.

It's what I do, when I'm not here, but he's a bit slimmer.
