For all of "Bland Browns" posturing about the recent poll results against him and his Government and saying that he would still win the next General Election, I might suggest to him that a vote winning strategm would be removing 10p a litre VAT on fuel at the pumps, although perhaps he has thought about that scenario already.
That would be a big help to us all.
Of course he never reads these boards so must do without my help.
If, as he says, he will listen to the people of this nation more often in future, maybe just maybe that is a possibility.
Many have voiced just that request in recent months without being heard.
I wonder what else he could do, apart from resigning that is. _________________ Please support Cancer Research. |

Just splitting hairs slightly Allan but I have a feeling he cant reduce the VAT because of EU regulations.
To reduce the duty by the same amount would be a great idea but doubt if he can afford it - time to increase tax on the rich and go back to 'old labour' ideals? _________________

| The only way broon could cut Fuel duty is to raise taxes or borrow more I can't see him taxing the rich any more or havinga new tax band of 50% for those earning 60,000 or more |

I'm not sure that's strictly true Zaf. My understanding is that once VAT is levied it can never be removed under EU rules, it can be reduced to the minimum though which is 5%.
At the moment reductions in fuel duty is being fiercely resisted by EU governments.
I'm at a bit of a loss though to understand why the cost of oil is so high. There are NO global problems with production.
Iraq, I understand is the world's 2nd biggest producer.
Am I right to suspect that the US; now in control of Iraqi oil production, are happy to let the price rise to pay for that illeagal war and occupation? After all, it fits. They can no longer afford (economically or politically) to pay for their presence there. And they have said Iraq will pay for their "liberation" through oil sales. It also takes the 'eye of the ball' for their own elections in November..... which the Republicans will win, naturally.
Besides, we can't afford it. Gordy's 'prudence' has been found out. |

Well this post revisited I can't say that the 2.5% reduction in vat helped very much. It doesn't help food for a start and if your a smoker or drinker the vat reduction was cancelled out by a hike in duty at the same time.
Clothes and funishing, TV's and expensive equipment isn't much good to the ordinary punter who is just trying to make ends meet.
Brown has been found out in other ways - he aint exactly the saviour of the world. Peter Mandelson is worst business manager ever and I wish there were an election this spring! |

I hear what you you are saying, but the Tories might well be much, much worse.
Not much of a choice to we peasants, is it! _________________ Please support Cancer Research. |

| I don't think you can say that "Last week wee 'Eck was on his way oot'. He was making the point that if as a minority government they couldn't get a budget through then he would have to stand down. It sort of focussed minds of Labour and LIb Dems who voted no thinking that the greens would vote for. Its Labour and the Lib Dems who are playing games. |

| That "Spring" SCOTTISH Labour Conference in Dundee was a bit of a damp squib! The Caird Hall in Dundee I have never seen so empty for a start. The substance of the shindig which had staring roles for Paw Broon and Messrs Murphy and Gray. Was to slag off the nationalists. No hint of what they would do. Must be hard to accept opposition in Holyrood whilst being in government at Westminister. 2010 hopefully will see a change. Labour will really come to terms with opposition and hopefully that will be a humbling position. |

| Why can't Broon just call an election now. He was unelected when he took No.10 and he will be ejected next May anyway. Just do it now and by the way just don't claim your PM's pension a backbenchers will do for you. |

I think it's time we just got rid of governments and live co-operatives.
Of course ... I'd insist you peasants just co-oped with each other and didn't bother me!!! _________________ Non Poster By Request |

Admittedly,NL will get a tanking in the next GE,including up here.
Thing is,will the Tories play fair with Scotland under an S.N.P government?
I doubt it very much. _________________ Life isn't about how many breaths you take but by how many people you leave breathless. |

Can be any worse than Gordon Brown and the Treasury at the moment, Gordon Brown is PM and he can't stand that his Labour Party don't run Holyrood it was always going to be bad. Camerson at least knows that if he does become PM he is going to have to have a better dialogue with Edinburg.
Wonder if folk up here will just vote Labour to keep the Tories out at Westminister - if so there is going to be helleva waste of votes. |

He will firstly not be able to spell his own name correctly, but also not be able to spell our Scottish capital city correctly as well.
Not much going for him then. _________________ Please support Cancer Research. |

So what I am normally able to type and drink Scotch at the same time, but now and again I make typo mistakes. I am human and think for myself. Not like Labour supporters who vote for anything that wears a Labour rosette - even a roll of loft insulation would do.
