Surely the "line out" to the "line in" would do for tapes?

You may need to adjust the volume but it should copy it.
If you have the right programme to do it.

The turntable has an input to connect your tape player to...than you can use the same programme to transfer them to the PC.  Remember to make sure the power is ON on the turntable.

is that the two little plugs at the back (one red and one white?) and erm, where do I stick them?

cummon guys,  you're talking to someone thats nearly technologically illiterate

might try at the weekend if not going to collect a foster doggy (not adopting,  just caring for him for a rescue society till he can be rehomed - they are desperate to move him from the situation he is in)

If this is the tape player you will need an adaptor to go from phono plugs (the red and white ones for right and left channels) to a stereo jack plug 3.5mm so as it can plug into your soundcard on your computer.

Try Maplins http://www.maplin.co.uk/?DOY=28m3

USB Twin Tape Deck

Manufacturer: ION

• ION has created a revolutionary USB dual cassette deck allowing you to convert your cassettes to CD or MP3 with included recording software
• ''Plug ''n'' Play'' USB - no drivers needed!
• Dual cassette deck with full auto stop
• Normal and high-speed dubbing
• Dynamic noise reduction system
• Metal and CrO2 tape selector
• LED level and function indication
• PC and Mac compatible

This innovative tape allows you to take your vintage; and not so vintage; collection of tapes and convert them via your PC into MP3, WAV or WMA digital files, or simply copy them to a CD. Transferring tape to digital has often been a complicated and expensive affair. Now you can get high quality sound transfers for an unbelievable price. The deck simply plugs into the USB port on your PC or Mac; you then either use the software to convert your music and listen to it through your computer or on your MP3. If you’ve built up an enviable collection, you want to spend your days listening to them not transferring them. The USB tape deck is compatible with any software that supports USB audio input sound cards. All you need to do is simply plug it into a spare USB port; no special drivers are required. Now there’s no excuse not to dust down those tapes, convert the music and take a trip down memory lane.

You won't get it to work with the turntable unless it has a pre-amp in it Zaf!

Unless the tape deck is built into a stereo systen that has a phono input for a turntable.

OK, Listen up!!
The turntable that Zaf has has an input for a tape deck to be connected to it. (Yes Zaf the red and white coloured sockets).  You connect a tape player to those and MAKE SURE THE TURNTABLE IS POWERED ON.  Then when you play the tape it will be saved by the same software that saves the vinyl, and converted to Mp3.

OK! let me work this out.
Turntable has an input for a tape deck?
Is the turntable separate or built into an Amplifier?

So the turntable has a pre-amplifier rather than the other way round?

Well if Zaf gets an output from the tape deck to the turntable and out to the computer it will.

Zaf, Woodys dad is trying to say there should be an input to the turntable via the red and white plugs, but they may not be the same as your tape players output socket/plug.  It may be a 5 or 7 pin din plug or if you are lucky you will have phonos out.
I think you would need to plug the phonos into the out from your record deck (IS THAT RIGHT WOODYSDAD?) it won't matter to much which way round they are, just the channels will be reversed.  They are normally marked anyway.

Ah! this turntable is made for using with a computer
Just ignore me folks, I am just muttering to myself

Is the red and white plugs phono plugs for an input and is there another output for the computer?
Getting there

OK Woodysdad, have I worked it out or am I as confused as Zaf

On the back of the turntable is an output for an amp, plus an input for a tape player.  There is also a USB socket (lead supplied) to connect to a PC.  If it is connected by USB to the PC, and connected to a tape player via the RCA sockets, then the tape will be converted to Mp3 provided the turntable is powered up!
