I know this has been aired before - but only today at lunchtime (how I hate that description meaning dinnertime)  I decided to visit a well known public house in Grangemouth around 11.30.
I was the only customer there until one other person arrived.

This guy was a reformed smoker, who although agreeing with me that pubs are in decline due to the fact that smokers don't frequent that often due to the smoking ban, he was also truly upset that most of his old pals no longer went there for a blether.
He, as a one time smoker was disgusted that other arrangements couldn't have been made to accomodate them within the pub premises that would satisify everyone including the management and government.

The non-smoking ban is and always will be IMO be the death knell for most if not all working class social activities.

ALL NON-SMOKERS MUST SHOW THAT THEY ARE WILLING TO RE-GENERATE PUBS AND CLUBS BY SHOWING THEY ARE READY AND WILLING TO DO SO, RATHER THAN DISPLAYING A BETTER THAN THOU ATTITUDE.

No doubt there will be many who disagree - BUT PROVE IT BY SHOWING THEY WILL GO OUT IN DROVES.

You are absolutely like I no longer go to the pub very much and really miss the banter over a couple of pints. I just can't stand having to leave and go outside for a fag. The social aspect has gone completely.
I accept it is better for staff without us propping up the bar smoking but some real thought should have gone into this law.
Is it too late for change? I hope Scotland will be the first place to overturn this and really come up with seperate blether/smoke rooms in the warm where we belong.
I think it should be revisited and lobbyied at holyrood. We had it introduced a year earlier and maybe we can be first to see sense.

I can see the point of view that it's a health hazard, more so from those who suffer the inhalation of cigs,i personally cannot stand the smell of them.

However, would it not be a better idea if clubs had the option of a smoking room such as Carrigans in Hamilton, there they have such a place and it has plenty ventilation to get rid of the smoke fairly quickly.

Prices wise, booze is way too dear, more so with the likes of Tesco,Asda,Morrisons all vying for customers with cheap booze on offer,if pubs and clubs want custom, bring their prices down to a decent level otherwise they will go bust.

nothing worse than smokers congregating outside pubs polluting public pathways etc  Fine polluting themselves,  but not others!!

I would advocate a total public ban, let them do it on their own properties or in their own back gardens!

I am a non-smoker. I am also a non-drinker.  But I am totally against this smoking in public places ban!!!

It's hitting my shares in B.A.T. and JD Wetherspoon!!!

In my very humble opinion I think establishments should have had a choice, some would become non-smokers others for the puffers.  When all the hullaballoo was going on before the ban, nearly all non-smokers could hardly wait for the day when they could go to the pubs again and enjoy their favourite tipple without the smoke, the smell and whatever else.  Well, where are they?   As for the bar staff complaining about smoke.  Why did they apply for jobs in a smoking environment?  Also I've been to parties or little get-togethers where the smokers have crammed themselves into the smallest room, usually the kitchen with half the non-smokers joining them soon after.

As a smoker (I've rolled my own for more years than I care to remember, I wish I didnt of course) I have absolutely no problem not lighting up in a non-smoking area.  But I've come across people who become hysterical at the mere sight of a crumpled rizla amongst my coins.

Some pubs could have had a room sealed away from the rest of the bar for smokers with a high degree of ventilation pulling out the smoke so as not to annoy others, this would be fine by me and indeed a lot of others.  But they chose not to allow it

It is nice to go and have a meal without someone lighting up at the next table to you.  Smokers (and I used to and don't mind people smoking, but not while I am eating) are generally selfish people and don't think of others when they light up.  I always did consider others and I dare say some of you did as well, but I find most don't.

Smoking is and will be attacked more and more while the Government has a bee in their bonnet.  Same as being slightly overweight is as well and drinking.

Those that go to a pub, drink and smoke and are slightly overweight, shame on you all

Since the ban many more people have stopped smoking and all the lost revenue that the government raked in from the taxes I've noticed drivers  being harder hit as time goes by, probably to make up for the losses, in my cynical view.  Some months ago I heard that a few insurance companies are actually now giving better deals to smokers knowing that they die younger (usually, not always though).  I knew it wouldnt take long before someone or other would see an advantage.   Smokers are already pariahs now.  Drug addicts have more rights these days.  How many smokers rob, mug and murder for a drag? Who'll be next, the drinkers.  Including the moderate drinkers and occasional drinkers.  Those shouting the loudest for tolerance are often the most intolerant individuals you're ever likely to meet. It borders on militancy.

I can't stand drunks but I wouldn't stop someone else from enjoying a drink just because the next person morphs into a monster after a few.  Fat people next? Ginger haired? Short people?

I agree that smoking is a filthy habit.  I'm glad you can't smoke in the cinema, or trains or planes. True, there are the s****hawk smokers who couldnt give a rat's squeak about others but these people generally couldnt care less about other things too.

Pubs being fined for providing warmth or shelter OUTSIDE for the smokers is all about control and authority and unquestioning obedience.

I see no harm in that what so ever, but I have to say that I wouldn't bother going outside to smoke.  I would just head off home.

Well, Oddball McAskill is now targetting kids between 13 and 16 for having consensual sex by criminalising them!

Don't know about anyone else, but I do know it goes on having busted a couple of 14 yr olds in the Manor grounds a few years ago!  What did I do?  I took a condom out off my wallet, threw it at them and told them to be damn careful ... they were too young to have kids of their own!  Then I suggested they wait till its dark next time ... when the dogs are allowed to roam.  Never seen them since.

There's absolutely no need to criminalise them. Our hypocritical society does its best to sexualise them from an early age as it is.  RD Laing and Erich Fromm were right about the way the West drives the kids insane!

Rant over!!!

Smoking and the Poll Tax were introduced firstly to we daft Scots to see what the UK general opinion was. The Poll Tax was an utter disgrace, but still goes on under another name today,  - Council Tax, which we have all, if not welcomed, have grudgingly accepted.
Public smoking was cunningly introduced to Scotland by our Scottish Labour Government during the summer months when we were okay with smoking outside.
This after extensive consultation with pubs and clubs whereby it was suggested that said premises would provide a separate ventilated area whereby smokers would be accomodated.
Upwards of £30,000 was spent by many brewers to upgrade their premises for this, only to be renaged upon by the final decision as we know it today.
We were used as a trial, much like the dreaded Poll Tax was used to guage our reaction before England was subjected to it.
Sadly we cow-towed and accepted without too much complaint.

Non-smokers did not answer the expected call to fill up the shortfall, so now many of us drink and smoke at home and remember when pubs and clubs were fantastic places to meet to enjoy a night out.
I agree that eating places should of course be smoke free, but what is next I wonder.
My God, I trust and hope that garlic is banned next! It has my vote!!!!

I find it crazy also, that persons driving a van etc for work, cant smoke in it. Maybe understandable if carrying paying passengers, but not if you own the vehicle and its your own transport. Why cant you smoke in it?

myself and OH are non smokers. btw.

I once made my sis go out to her car, in my drive to have her smoke. it was a cold night, but I took a glass of wine out to her.

sindy, a local workman and his biz partner were both smokers but as his van was classed as commercial some plastic pc (those support officers thingies) reported him. It went to court and the builder was fined. The reasoning behind it that if he was carrying passengers, regardless of whether they were smokers or not, he was breaking the law by allowing smoking at his workplace, i.e.van.

Let's face it ... smoking is anti-social AND a killer.

But so's drinking.

Our governments want to control us as much as the Church did back in medieval times ... and we'll deserve it if we let them!

We need to get together ... unite ... and demand Anarchy!!!

Viva La Revolución ...

There's a tip if ever I've heard one.

There is nothing like true love and understanding between loving partners to keep a great relationship going.
