Tis Christmas tomorrowok, not quite but I've got boxes arriving from another life and it's so long since I packed them that I can't remember what the hell is in there.
Well apart from the saxophone that has probably seized up

Hmmm, to be honest I never really expected the arrival of my stuff to be anything more than a wee bit exciting. But jeez it was an emotional rollercoaster. Old photos, baby books, etc

I know that feeling Alison.
We downsized when we moved home 5 years ago and as a result there are unopened boxes still stored in the attic. I don't seem to have missed the contents though, so am in two minds whether to just get rid of them. None of the unopened boxes contain personal items like documents, photos etc, as I packed these separately, so I expect the contents are really junk.
Should I get rid of them unopened, or start sifting through them??

I've been going through long unopened boxes and it has been wonderful at times what has come to light.

You guys are probably quite correct. I doubt if I could throw out any unopened box. I'm much too curious (nosey) for that.

Put a date on the box when you put it in the attic, if in 5 yrs it has not been opened, throw it. You can do without it or the contents are long forgotten aboot.
Best not to open any, just take them to the skip
On the other hand, there may be something of great value, memory wise or other! So maybe's you had better open them all and have a look.
Then you can say to yourself "Why the hell did I ever think of keeping that!"

Well WAC, you were right.
I went into the attic and pulled out one small box. Inside was an indoor water fountain which I had apparently bought as a gift for my daughter-in-law as I had written a short message on it along with her name and it was dated 2004.
I guess I must have given her something else and shoved that box away with the others. Might open another one soon and see what treaures I can find. Probably only broken dishes or something.

One house I moved into had loads of stuff left from previous occupiers, unfortunately nothing valuable. A box full of soft stuffed animals is all we kept. However I did read somewhere that someone found loads of old Scottish 5 pounds note really old ones. I think they got quite a bit for them. "Cash in the attic" now that's what I would like to find. Then it would be like Christmas.

I'm going through a version of this kind of thing myself. The short of a very long story is, when my mum died, I simply had to get everything hers and mine out of where we lived ASAP, and into storage, with no time to decide what I wanted to save, bin or sell.
That was almost 6 years ago, and it's only been in the last few months where I have had any real time to myself to approach going through any of it with this in mind. Ah, the memories, and all that fun stuff....but there's a lot of things as well that I have no use for, and that I could do to sell, but I'm perplexed with how to sort and shift some of it. Seven boxes of crystal, china, glass and porcelain antiques, anyone?

I'd be very careful how you dispose of that type of thing. If some of it belonged to your mother, there is a good chance it belonged to your grandmother ior great grandmother even, and may well be valuable now.
Even books can fetch a good price.
I had a first edition of Lord of the Rings which I loaned out about 30 years ago before it became popular, and never had it returned.
That book is now worth several thousand pounds. Grrrh.
Be very wary when disposing of old stuff.

Well spotted. Much of it was my dad's parents' crystal and such. The challenge is in finding someone reputable who'd give me something decent for it....I likely could easily get ripped off by someone unscrupulous.
