The sun drops its support for New LabourI see that just hours after Gordon Brown's keynote speech to the party faithful at their conference in Brighton. Murdoch has decided that "Labour has lost it" and will no longer be supporting the party in the run up to the General election. The sun previously switched support from the Tories to Labour in 1996. The change may well be very much English edition based as I don't see that it would benefit the Scottish edition to back the Tories. The Scottish sun has for some reason become the most popular red top newspaper in Scotland. They did have a very brief dalliance with the SNP in the early 90's but can't see that happening again. They may well stick with the Labour party up here. Its pretty much a case of double standards though. I guess it all about selling newspapers and always trying to be on the winning side for them. I hate Rupert Murdoch!

The Sun has always aimed at the lowest, less intelligent population with crappy sexist headlines and adolescent innuendo to increase their sales revenues, so that I suppose is good business for them and their bloated business enterprise.
However, I for one have never taken into account their rank conservative viewpoint, even when they oh so cleverly predicted a Labour victory when the majority already knew.
IMO a conservative victory in the next general election will be a vote for poverty for we the underdog masses however much most folk dislike GB.
The Labour Party must get back in office otherwise Pandora's box will be opened once again.

True - however we in Scotland couldn't do anything about the Tories getting in 1979 and even John Major got in in 1992 much to every one's surprise. What England wants we have to accept. The only difference is that the last time the Tories were in power we did not have a Scottish parliament and I can't see the conservatives getting away with half of what they did last time.
We still need a good representation at Westminster by the SNP and that's what I will be hoping for. A Labour vote in Scotland next time will be as much wasted as it was during the Thatcher years.

The advantage of that is that they are also the group less likely to give a monkeys about voting at all.

Maybe the government of the day could make a bit of money out of that situation then Merek by fining everyone that doesn't bother to vote. They do it in Australia and some European countries. A 500 quid fine would soon make people vote even if it is only to spoil their ballot paper if they so wish.

Sorry, that scenario is too much like "Big Brother" for me.
Voting is voluntary; although I have to admit that something has to be done for the silent, uncaring masses who neglect their privilege to vote.
Those types are being misled by the latest cleverly worded misleadng promises by the Tory Party.
No one can be sure that their vote is a vote for the better future of all.
However! I can only say this! Any and all votes are positive!
Not bothering to vote at all, Is giving in to giving up, and hell mend you all.

People fought and are still fighting to try to ensure that the electorate had a say, however small.
Think of South Africa when the blacks got the vote and some people walked for 2 days just to cast their vote.
I'd make voting compulsory but I think the idea of fining folk for not voting isn't a good idea.
Too many reasons to list and I'm having my breakfast right now...

Like it, or lump it; voting in the UK is voluntary, although to make it compulsory is a mite extreme. We are a democracy after all, not a separatist police state like South Africa was then.
