Woody, go stick your head in a bucket!!!!
I'm just above a 1/2Mb tonight.
I want the extra speed they gave to you back!
I'm supposed to have a 8Mb connection

I was on 2Mb and I ordered the V+ box..like Sky+ you can record two programmes and watch a third, rewind a live prog, pause etc....and they said they would upgrade me to 20Mb I downloaded a file from Perisphere last night....came in at 14 odd MB!! So they obviously upgraded the BB before the guy fitted the new box today!

Good service that.
Virgin was OK on dial-up.
I don't know why they didn't pay me to go away
I was always on-line (cut off every two hours max) but it was 10 times better than BT and for less!
Not with Virgin now though!
When I first got Broadband it went like a train then it got slower and slower.
They don't appear to care as long as they get the money!!!!

Aye BoB, it can be like that on ASDL, but on cable, there's no loss of speed!
I have no complaints either with them, or Telewest!
|
BoB
|
No cable out here in the sticks though.
Nearest used to be Westhill a few miles out the Alford road, but the company went to the wall as predicted.
Don't know if the cables were used by anyone else or not?
Just have to put up with it for a while yet.
They weren't even going to put in Broadband here until there was a gnashing of teeth and a petition.

Aye, we're lucky here..this place has a population of around 1,100..yep, even the cable guys couldn't believe it!! Anyhoo, I now have these grear speeds, Hard Drive recording and HD tv! So I'm a happy chappy!

We live out in the sticks so its about 8 miles from the exchange.. .Yeah it is pretty slow, sometimes it is slower than dial-up, well it feels that way ..Any ideas that dont involve tossing my PC out the window

Even a 1/2 Mb is quicker than dial up! If you think your connection is slow try using Dial up again
Trouble is that web designers forget that not everyone has fast connections and don't take account of it i.e. when you used to go to a site with a fancy Flash intro, you used to get a SKIP INTRO button. These are getting few and far between now so people with Dial up on slow connections have to wait for ages before they get past the Home Page, this can be very annoying. I don't want to look at a Fash intro anyway, I just want to get the info I want and go.
Only way to speed things up is if the website has a text only option, these are few and far between as well.
This year the Father-in-law will be able to get 20Mb at his exchange
His connection is slower than mine, though the computer say it is running at 12MB it is more than optimistic. I think he is running around 2Mb downwards.
I don't have a quick fix for your speed Des, sorry.
Any ideas accepted!

I tried "OnSpeed" accelerator software, which was highly recommended by the magazine Computer Active to increase my dial-up speed at the time.
Whilst it did improve that, it was a real bind when I migrated to Broadband. It supposedly was compatible, and should have been easily uninstalled if any problems occurred, but it wasn't.
In the end I had to wipe my hard drive and re-install Windows to get back to normality before installing broadband.
I lost almost 10 months of pre-payment for the OnSpeed software.
Broadband really depends on where you are in the country, the amount of users on line at any given time, and the time of the day on which you decide to use it.
Exhorbitant claims by any provider of their Broadband speed service should be only taken with the "proverbial pinch of salt".
|
BoB

Yep!
Its a joke, they should only be allowed to charge for the speed they can give you on a day to day basis

Not too sure if mine is any better or worse than others.
But it's what I have to endure nonetheless, courtesy of BT Internet.

It's all got to do with the time of day, how busy it is, how many channels you have open....Intheory one channel open on a 10 MB set up should give ye near enough 10MB, or 5 channels, 2Mb per channel etc etc etc!

Contacted BT regarding the problem & i got this in reply to it..
I understand from your e-mail that you are facing a slow speed issue.
I am providing you the steps please apply it to resolve your issue. The steps are given below.
I would like to mention that I have run speed tests on the line and it is evident that there is no line fault . Thus there might be other factors which might be causing the issue. I have thus provided you with the following troubleshooting steps. Please perform the same.
(1)?Check the current line speed.
1. Double click on the Internet Explorer icon and launch the home page.
2. In the address bar please type in the web address www.speedtester.bt.com
3. Put in home telephone number on which the Broadband is working and check the
current line speed. Keep a note of the speed available.
(2)?Power Cycle.
Power both the router and the computer off. Unplug all the cables connecting the
router to the computer. Wait for 30 seconds. Re-plug the cables back. Power the
devices on.
I would also request you to run a line test, if possible, after performing each of the following steps. This would help you identify the exact reason for the slow browse.
(3) Check for faulty micro filters or phone equipment.
1. Remove the micro-filter and connect your router directly to the master socket
and check for the connection. You could do so by using the cable that connects
your filter and the telephone base unit. If it is working fine, then there is a
problem with the Micro filter, so please replace it.
2. Remove other devices like corded and cordless phones, fax machines, Sky set-
top boxes, and phone-connected burglar alarms, if any.
3. Restart the computer.
(4) Check for other devices.
Check whether you have more that one computer connected to the router. If that is so
then remove them. Try and keep only one computer connected to the router. Also check if
you have any of the following devices that cause potential EMI (Electro Magnetic
Interference) placed near the router and remove them. Otherwise, replace the computer
and the router. These devices should not be placed in close vicinity of the router and the
computer.
1. Halogen desk lamps with dimmers or dimmer switch.
2. Electronic devices, such as stereo speakers, PC speakers.
3. Televisions, monitors, microwave ovens, etc.
4. Routing the telephone line parallel to an AC power cord.
5. Electronic insect electrocution devices (bug zappers).
6. Any other emitter of high frequency electromagnetic radiation.
(5) Check Browser settings and delete temporary files.
1. Open 'Internet Explorer' and click on 'Tools'.
2. Click on 'Internet Options'.
3. Under 'General' tab, click on 'Clear History'.
4. Click 'Yes'.
5. Select on 'Delete Cookies' and click 'Ok'.
6. Select 'Delete Files'.
7. Check the option 'Delete all offline content'.
8. Click on 'Ok' to close the 'Internet Options' window.
9. Click 'Start' and then click 'Run'.
10. Type %TEMP% in the open box.
11. A new window (Temp) will appear.
12. Delete as many files and folders as possible and close the window. (Please
ensure that only temporary internet files are deleted).
13. Again click 'Start' and then click 'Run'.
14. Type 'cleanmgr' (without quotes) and click 'Ok'.
15. Select the files to delete from the Disk Cleanup window and click 'Ok'.
16. Close the window.
(6) Check for faulty home internal phone wiring.
1. Remove the faceplate of the Master socket with a screwdriver. This will reveal a
test socket on the right-hand side. This connects directly to the exchange,
bypassing your home phone wiring and extensions.
2. Plug your router or modem directly into this test socket via a micro filter.
3. Restart the computer.
4. Run another speed test on the line through 'www.speedtester.bt.com'. (Please
make sure that before the speed test is run all the applications are closed).
I would also request you to keep a track of the speed test results, if possible, since we might require the data to tally them in the future, if the issue persists.
Please check your line inside your premises.
You may also visit the following interactive flash tutorial site to identify the reasons for slow browse issues http://www.btyahoo.com/noslowwebpages/

This is very handy Des, Thanks.
http://www.speedtester.bt.com/
I just did it and the results are
I could send a letter quicker!
OK! I joke but their speed is a joke as well.
I will do this a few times a day and get back to my ISP.
They can't ignore BT's own test like they try to dismiss others
|
Des
|
I tried everything that they suggested & there was no change in the speed so i contacted BT again & now they say its because i live on an island & that im 9 miles from the exchange..
When i said that i pay the same as other broadband users that do live near the exchange i was suddenly cut off, mmnnnnnnnnn
|
BoB
|
You can always ring up again Des.
Thing is, what are you paying for and what are you getting.
If you are only getting 2Mb there is no point in paying for 8Mb.
See if you can downgrade to a lesser package.
I am fighting with my ISP just now as well.
I am paying for an 8Mb connection when they knew I wouldn't get one
I am some tines slower than you Des, I will be leaving them very shortly unless they get their act together.
Maximum speed on my line has been dropped to 5Mb.
It used to be able to support 7Mb, then I was told 6Mb by BT, now it is down to 5MB
Geeze! I'll just put this in the post, it may be quicker
Remember that 9 miles from the exchange is quite a bit and the cables might go 20 miles to get to you depending on the route they take.

Yeah i know but given todays technology you would think they would have got round the problem of distance by now after all TV can make George Bush sound almost intelligent ok thats not true but you get my meaning

Des, you are now in the realm of fantasy making George Bush sound intelligent
What I can't understand is that there were fibre optic cables near here and BT removed them so as they could put in broadband, yet other companies are putting them in for high speed connections!!!

If anything it is getting slower..There is a computer "wizard" who lives in the village along from me so im going to ask him to take a look-see

Lifted from another forum...............
The BT man that came to me yesterday, suggested leaving my router on might help get my speeds up (I'm reluctant to do that because it sometimes freezes when left on too long).
However it seems to have worked... before
2275 kb/s upload 325 kb/s download
I found it just took a bit of pestering of my ISP and BT, to get the settings fixed on my phone line and now I'm continuing to enjoy........ after
6822 kb/s - upload 375 kb/s download after leaving it on......

Yep and don't these companies rip people off!!!
I know it is an up to 8Mb, but the ISP themselves admit they have had a problem for ages.
Anyway, an 8Mb connection should be faster than the next speed down, which is a 4Mb.
I would be quite happy if they could supply me with a steady 5Mbs.
I just wonder who is being the biggest Morons here?
The companies who promise a fast connection (and all so often fail to deliver) or the customers who at least expect a decent service
I have also been left without a connection for hours and once for two days, this repeatedly happens, I just don't think it is good enough for these companies to be ripping people off.
Virgin, I was with for Dial-up and I found them to be on the whole good.
I have not been with them for Broadband.
I don't expect full speed all the time, I just expect to pay for the speed I can get and not a slow service that even the ISP admits is not very good!

It would depend on what you were paying for Scottybee?
Far faster that what I get.
I am paying for a 8Mb connection and not even getting 1/4Mb at times.
That reminds me, they have never got back to me so I am going to go with someone else with all the hastle it involves!!!!
