Scottish Tourism

I work in the tourist industry, in a kind of way.
I've noticed this summer, is extremely quieter than this time last year.
I'm wondering if it's because of the fuel prices.

I only know about my area, so was wondering if this is the same everywhere?
Here in the Highlands, we normally, have a really busy summer.
Even the "Tartan" shops, in our high street are suffering.

I was in town earlier today, and the busiest shop there, was the chippy.
I must admit, it is one of the best chippy's, I ever been to.

I have a wasp flying about my head just now.
So, I'm going to guide it to the window.
I dinna like squashing them, incase, all it's mates turn up for the funeral.

Tis a bit quieter than usual and the Americans have stayed away this year, they have been on the decline due to exchange rate etc.

Continentals are not flooding over this year, I suppose we are all feeling the cost of higher bills etc.

There is normally a lot of tourists around right now but not this year.

Even down south the hotel I was in said it was quieter from Europeans than usual, they were still busy but not fully booked.

Fuel has got to be a big factor in it as well!

The cost of fuel is killing our economy.

Naw! It's the smokin' ban that keeps the tourists away. Who can really enjoy any scenery and culture without a fag and a pint?

That is bull, Alan - most European countries now have a smoking ban similar to that in Scotland. The reason Europeans are staying away is certainly because of fuel prices but also because of the asteronomical prices charged in Britain. My daughter and I spent 2 weeks in Canada last summer and it cost us less than one week would have in Scotland.

A cabbie mate of mine went to Mallaig the other week.  1 Fish supper, One baked tattie with a filling, two cokes...£26!!

The bloke in the fish shop said' are ye here on holiday?'

My mate said.."Are you taking the PISS pal!! "

That's a bit of a strange comment?
I wonder what the origins of it are?

Who the hell would want to take piss?
Where would you take it to?

Unless it was to put on a jellyfish sting.

A paper cup goes to whoever can answer these questions.

Tell me something? Did you really have to go to Canada to get away from we smokers, or did you pay a surcharge for your flight due to fuel costs?
I cannot believe that you spent less going to Canada for a fortnight rather than spending a week in Burntisland.

I was in Torquay last week and was directed to a Restaurant for an evening meal.
The first item on the menu outside was for a bowl of tomato soup priced at £5.50.
I found a chippy down the seafront. Pie and chips £3.90. Nuff said!

I maybe didn't phrase that too well, Alan - the time we spent in Canada (car hire, hotles, petrol, food) was a lot cheaper than in Scotland. The petrol, of course, was ridiculously cheap and eating out and overnighting was easily half of Scottish prices. The flight? OK - more expensive than flying to Edinburgh or Glasgow (from Germany) - but not so very much more.

Would this saying go back to when they uses to use urine for bleaching laundry?
Just a guess

They used to collect it from doors of houses.
They tramped it into cloths to get them clean!  Geeze
