crikey, how old ARE ye blackadder
Lord Blackadder

I'm younger than most of you lot!!!

Blame my late mother's HUGE record collection and her idolisation of pretty-boy singers of the 60s n 70s for my IMMENSE musical knowledge!!!

Of course, for you peasants without a clue ... ie ... 99.9% of you ... Eloise is a modern interpretation of Heloise, a very famous name in Hisorical Literature.

Some have it that romantic love was an invention of the Middle Ages. If so, then the true story of Pierre Abelard and Heloise is one of the templates of this narrative. Both Abelard and Heloise were prominent intellectuals of twelfth century France. Abelard, of noble birth and eighteen years the senior of Heloise, was a prominent lecturer in philosophy. Abelard was an adventurous thinker, and was constantly at odds with the Church. On several occasions he was forced to recant and burn his writings.

Heloise was a strong-willed and gifted woman who was fluent in Latin, Greek and Hebrew, and came from a lower social standing than Abelard. At age 19, and living under her uncle Fulbert's roof, Heloise fell in love with Abelard, who she was studying under. Not only did they have a clandestine affair of a sexual nature, they had a child, Astrolabe, out of wedlock. Discovered by the Fulbert (who was a Church official), Abelard was assaulted by a hired thug and castrated, and Heloise entered a convent. Abelard was exiled to Brittany, where he lived as monk. Eventually Heloise became abbess of the Oratory of the Paraclete, an abbey which Abelard had founded.

See how I teach you all new things you never knew?

Say "Thank You, Lord Edmund!"

I'll raise you my late parents' big band and modern jazz records on 78s, LPs and a few early 45s dating from the late 1930s onward!
Lord Blackadder

My mother was born in the 50s, Peri.

She didn't collect 78s and she wasn't into Jazz, Swing or Big Band.

That was my late grandad was into all that. He played a very cool saxophone! But I can barely recall him playing it much. Only a few times in the Great Hall because of the acoustics, before I got shipped off to boarding school.

You didn't say "Thank you, Lord Edmund!"

Ten demerits and a week's ban from the Tuck Shop!!!

You're a wee pup!  My parents were born in the early 1920s and I was born the month the Beatles came to America the first time.

My dad was a tenor sax man in his own right, and I got to record him in a number of settings from a jazz trio up through big band, until shortly before he died.

Here's an example of both my early recording engineering and Dad's musical chops, in an October 1982 recording made slightly over three months before he died:  'The magic flea'.

Dad's solo starts 1.00 into the track.  This should earn my reprieve!
Lord Blackadder

I listened ... not my cuppa tea ...

So ... reprieve, my arse!!!

Twenty demerits and TWO weeks ban from the Tuck Shop!!!

Very clever, but it's not really due to the Barry Ryan song (alas I remember it being released !!!! argh!!)

Have been a huge ELO Jeff Lynne fan for as long as I can remember so it's from that ELOise materialised.

Twonk!!

"Eloise" is a pop song first released in 1968. It was sung by Barry Ryan, and written by his twin brother Paul Ryan. Running for a little over five minutes and 41 seconds, it featured strong orchestration, stronger vocals, and a brief slow movement. In that it is similar to the same year's hit "MacArthur Park". "Eloise" sold 3 million copies worldwide and reached number 2 in the UK's Record Retailer chart, but hit number 1 in the NME and Melody Maker charts.

In 1986 it was remade by The Damned, reaching number 3 in the UK charts. On the back of the commercial success of the Phantasmagoria album, The Damned released the track as a stand-alone single, and were rewarded with their biggest hit as "Eloise" reached #3, spending 9 weeks on the UK singles chart, boosted by two different 12" releases. It was not included on any studio albums, but has since been issued on several Damned compilations.

"Eloise" was also covered by Howard Kaylan (he of The Turtles and Flo and Eddie) in his 2005 solo album, "Dust Bunnies." In 1968 it was recorded by French popstar Claude François and 1987 by Spanish artist Tino Casal. Most recently it has been covered by a Spanish symphonic metal group, Stravaganzza, though this last cover version is properly a cover of Tino Casal's Spanish translation.

Finnish singer Tapani Kansa did a version in Finnish. In return, later Finnish version was released as a single by Finnish band Se in 1979 and also performed by Finnish Leningrad Cowboys in their "Global Balalaika Show" on August 23rd 2003.
