Harry and that Paki'.

Never mind the Royals, but how often have we earthlings called Paki's; well Paki's?
We're off down to the Paki shop, or are the Paki's open this morming to get our Sunday rolls and milk etc!

Harry boy is just like any other squaddy who will call anyone he doesn't know by name, Jock! Paddy! Mick! or indeed Taffy!

What a furore about absolutely nothing!! If that is big deal news and a reason to ridicule the royals then it's about time we all should take an extreme reality check.

I am not a fan vis a vis the Royal Family, but c'mon, get real!!!!!
Lord Blackadder

The whole rotten family is institutionally racist anyway!!

Phil the Greek is the worst by far if you look at HIS escapades over the years ... and then we hear Chuck calls a guy, Sooty???

Now, I'm not a fan of PC  (nor a monarchist) but I agree with the peasant, AllanP.  Sometimes we all do it.  But we have to be careful we're not going too far when it does become racist!

Helluva day when I agree with a common serf, isn't it???
tibbie dunbar

Why did this News of The World tabloid rubbish headline the BBC and Sky News when on the same day a Royal Marine lost his life in the war in Afghanistan?
Jamrie

This is now verging on the ridiculous, its just been reported (Telegraph update) that anti-racism campaigners are demanding an apology from the Prince of Wales for calling an Indian friend "Sooty" - even though the man himself has said he is not in the least offended.

In fact "Sooty" whose real name is Kolin Dhillon is a well respected member of the Cirencester Park Polo Club, and has gone on record as saying that all his friends, and not just members of the Royal family call him by his nickname.

So why is it that the anti-racism campaigners are going out of their way to make a big issue from this story......... The mind boggles.

Yes Tibbie you are quite right, it seems that some of the media don't know what their priorities should be. It seems that "sensationalism" is the key to selling newspapers.
Xcotty

It really isn't a nice word though.
If it offends folk, then it shouldn't be used, in my personal opinion.
I canny stand the word, and hate hearing it said.

I know the media go over the top, and miss real news stories.
So I definately agree, that as a story, it shouldn't have been headline news.

The truth about the royals is, they don't have a bloody clue, about the real world.
I don't have any time for any of them.
Jamrie

Xcotty, what word are you on about, Sooty or Paki? Or are they, in your opinion both not nice words?

As I said in my earlier post, this subject is now verging on the ridiculous, and on many other websites that I visit, it has taken on an unbelievable  venomous response.

I personally, couldn't give a toss, but let me add that I, being an ex-serviceman can state that the remark made by Prince Harry was not made in a derogotory manner, would you insult a fellow soldier who you might have to rely on to save your life?...No of course not.
This was nothing more than barrack room bantar that happened three years ago.

All servicemen go through some form of racial abuse, especially if you are a Jock, Paddy, Taffy, Gordie, Scouse, Brummie or whatever. And the point is no offence is ever taken. There again perhaps we Brits are just thick skinned.

As far as I am concerned, the guilty party is the guy who sold the video to the NOTW. He is the one that should be castigated.
Xcotty

If both those words are being used,Jamrie I don't think they should be.
I understand the banter, in the forces, and services.
Fair enough if the folk they were directed at don't mind.
But I'm not sure, they would be 100% happy to be called those names.

Imagine what their parents, sisters brothers, would think to hear that a loved one,
was being called those names, on a daily basis.
They ARE racist terms now, maybe they never used to be, but they are now.

This isn't aimed at you Jamrie, it's just a reply.

But how the hell is the world going to find peace, if this keeps happening.
I know it's a bit of a dream, but we need to start somewhere.
If something as simple as dropping name calling can help, then surely its better.
Everyone needs to realise, it's one big world, full of different cultures.
There was always going to come a time, when they all started to merge together.
I personally have no problem with that.

Good longlasting friendships, can come from anywhere.
I would rather that, than the alternative.

Thats the end of my sermon for today folks.
AllanP

IMO we are all becoming far too sensitive to being called knicknames, to which I suspect are only harmless terms to call those people we know.

How often have we heard footballers referring to others as Woodsy, Blinksy, or other such meaningless terms.
We as a human race are fast becoming de-sensitised as to what is politically correct or not.
For goodness sake, there are far, far many other reasons to living life in this world these days than having to bother about what is or what is not an acceptable paraphrase.

If it had been any other person rather than Royal Harry it would have been ignored.
That would have been the correct response to his exaggerated remark taken out of context.

There are other many much more important issues for us all to worry about these days.
Jamrie

Well said Allan, I agree that we are becoming far too over-sensitive to nicknames.
One thing that we Brits, and perticularly the Scots, were renowned for was our sense of humour, and unfortunately that is now being slowly eroded by the PC brigade.
The way things are going we won't be able to tell national jokes any more, you know the type, usually about a Scotsman, Englishman, and Irishman.   There was definately no insult intended, and none was ever taken.
How times have changed.

I really do despair at times
Xcotty

I understand, what you are both saying.
But there are nicknames, and nicknames.

I was in a pub, not long ago, when one of the boys.
Said, "Look at that Paki B*****d"

This was directed at a young girl, who had come in with her pals, for a night out.

I poured my pint over his head.
He's lucky thats all I did, the rest of the boys agreed with me.

In that instance, do you not agree, that was an offensive thing to say about someone?

He didn't know the girl, none of us did.
He used that term, simply because of skin colour.

Good for you, Xcotty!

Xcotty, of course it was offensive, no-one should ever be called a b******, and you did the right thing in the way that you showed your disapproval.

But would you have done the same thing if the guy had said "Wow!! Look at that lovely Paki bird thats just come in, she's absolutely gorgeous"?
No I don't think you would.

I can understand what you are getting at, because it seems that in this day and age, to some people, the word Paki can be very offensive.

But getting back to the crux of this story, ie Harry's gaffe. It seems that some words used in a friendly way between members of the armed forces would be regarded as quite insulting in civvy street.

And being an ex-serviceman I'm not making excuses, but  that's the way it is, and I can assure you that there is certainly no malice intended whatsoever.
Xcotty

This isn't really going anywhere is it?

I find the P word offensive, maybe thats just me.

There are too many points, I agree, and disagree with.
I'd end up writing a flipping epic post, to try to explain myself.

So Jamrie, what I agree with, I agree with.
What I don't, I'll just keep to myself, cos I like you.
catpurr

The world has gone mad!!!!! I go to my Paki's for milk etc etc Paki is an abbreviation, in my book no more no less, do the French go mental when they are called frogs? Americans are yankies maybe the New Zealanders will sue us for calling them Kiwi's, and then their is us, Jocks Mac's, Scotties, we ALL have nicknames learn to deal with it, and what about the area's of insuling people? oh he/she is a fat B****** God she/he looks like a dog, or wishing smokers would fall of the Island of Britain!!
Even the most sanctimonious   has done one or the other.
