Guitar HeroesDid anyone catch Guitar Heroes from the BBC on Beeb4 last night? If not, catch it again on BBCi player. It was a fantastic compilation of performances from the likes of Carlos Santana, Mark Knopfler, Peter Green and of course Jimi
Ah, don’t you just miss The Old Grey Whistle Test and the lovely whispering Bob Harris?

Didn't see it.
Old Grey Whistle Test
The program took the music that was not on Top of the Pops and brought it to the people.
I wish they would bring back programs like this again.
I believe they changed the format near the end and spoiled it a bit.

I love the commentary at the start of this Woodysdad,
This is the face the public wants...he has turned himself into a bizarre, self-constructed freak...
I seem to remember my parents thinking much the same thing, especially after they heard him sing. Brilliant!
I found an interview of Bob Harris by our local lass Sally Taylor giving a wee insight into The Old Grey Whistle Test.
They had a budget of £500 per show, which was very low even in those days. In addition to the technical costs the artists themselves had to be paid. David Bowie, for example, played three songs and was paid £50.
John Lennon refused to accept his fee in cash, insisting that he should be rewarded instead with chocolate Bath Oliver biscuits!

Not bad for a show with no budget and made in a basement

I think they did a wee revival BoB, but it didn't go down well.
The original series was brilliant, I loved it too.

Yep,watched the show,brought back a lot of memories,Mark Knopfler now he's good,very good.
Got a cassette in the loft at the mo,has lots of early Dire Straits stuff, raw as anything too,not bad for a Weegie bloke,eh!
Btw,one of my favs was The Sounds of the 70's,always remember a great set by Rory Gallagher, another awesome guitarist.
Personally,i feel sorry for young folk cos they missed so many great guitarists that were around in the 60's 70's and 80's,then again,it all boils down to chance i guess.
One album that i feel is totally under-rated is Split by the Groundhogs, yet Tony McPhee never managed to replicate the album live, then again,it was mainly due to studio out-takes i suppose.

I remember that with different presenters and more interviews out and about with specials from around the world.
All people wanted to hear was the music and seeing the artists live, they had to sing and play or they would be found out there.
I didn't think much of it, though I have seen some of the old ones now and they were just what people wanted.
Why change something that works?
If it ain't broke, don't fix it
