CheLast night at the cinema I watched part one of Steven Soderbergh’s two–part biopic Che. The documentary-style film stars the Oscar winning actor Benicio del Toro as Ernesto Che Guevara. Soderbergh said that the film was not about whether he agreed with Che or not and it didn’t make judgments about his achievements. It just told the story.
I enjoyed it and will certainly be going along to watch the second part when it is released next month. While the film didn’t make judgments, it certainly made me question the iconic status we seem to have of Che as hero of the worker class.
When asked about the executions in Cuba at the United Nations he answered,
“Executions? Certainly we execute. And we will continue executing as long as it is necessary”
So, Che glamorous freedom-fighting vagabond warrior or Che the murderer?
