Beat the energy hike?

Watched some of the "Tonight" programme on ITV (8th July) which highlighted far too many people having problems with rising costs because of their heating bills, including one old guy who commited suicide because of this ever growing problem when he no longer was able to pay the suppliers who are making billion's out all of us and refuse to drop prices.

We as a nation are sitting on our biggest and best resource that would help to minimise the fuel problem nationwide if we could only disregard this global warming emission's crap. Al Gore take note!!

The answer to all our problems is; Yes! You've guessed it... Coal!

Once regarded as the British Nation's greatest wealth, and since then Margaret Thatcher's greatest folly, it is now needed to be once again resurrected to it's full glory.

Yes, I hear you all say that it cannot be done as all the mines have been left to founder and flood and have been filled in now.

What will happen once oil supplies falter and eventually fail?

Wind and water power or Nuclear power will not be able to fulfill our needs in the future unless there is a global catastrophe that reduces populations worldwide which would reduce demand.

Some householders are converting to wood burning stoves these days in an effort to cut costs, so more deforestation will happen.
Once oil runs out, or be only available to the rich and famous, what then?

Back to the good old horse and cart - although thankfully I hope, not in my lifetime.

Our beloved and caring politicians are sitting on their fat behinds with fingers crossed when action is needed from them NOW!

Time to invest in the coal mines and sod Global warming, which IMO is a myth created by unscrupulous uncaring greedy business moneymakers and swallowed whole by the vast majority of us. BUT NOT ME!

the greatest follies of all times were at the hands of that dreadful Thatcher woman imo    In addition to her destroying our coal and steel industries,  neither gas, electricity or water should have been privatised, or for that matter the trains.  To continue my rant about that dreadful woman rather off-topic she shouldnt have interfered and introduced part (and by the back door) privatisation of the inland revenue, the MoBW and may other departments, both council or civil servant based either.

The thought of going back to coal or nuclear power does worry me (for different reasons), so what on earth is the answer?  I cant see wind power or wave power contributing enough to cope with the demands of modern society so what would a solution be that doesnt add to the 'greenhouse gasses' and allows society to continue on as 'normal'?

Or should we accept we need to use less energy?  difficult when China, India and the US are determined to continue on expanding their use of energy totally oblivious of the harm they are doing to the planet.

as a footnote - GB's constant reteric about global warming and what we should be doing about it domestically pisses me off big time!

This evening I watched the BBC news which reported that British Coal is now considering re-opening a deep mine pit in Northern England along with expanding surface mined coal in the North of England to supply our coal fired power stations.
The price of imported coal has risen in the past decade from $35 a ton to more than $250 a ton, so it makes our vast coal reserves worth exploiting and indeed expanding in this current fuel hungry world we now live in.

If you believe that global warming is caused by burning fossil fuels then what are your idea's as to what we should do now?

Perhaps we should now be considering banning all high performance car racing meetings or maybe power boat races instead, so as to help reduce carbon emissions. Jet aircraft too maybe.
Would that help? Not much!

The rain forests and jungle clearances to make way for arrable land is doing much more harm, as these previously untouched area's do far more to help clean up carbon waste gases by converting these gases back into useable oxygen.

Erupting volcanoes spew vast amounts of harmful gases into our atmosphere every year than we as a populace could ever hope to overcome by cutting our so called greenhouse gas emissions.

Back in the early 60's we were warned that in the 70's we should be seeing the first signs of a new ice age.
How wrong was that prediction!

Aye, Man has been doing his best to destroy the very world he lives in.

I read somewhere that when one Volcano erupted it put more pollution onto the air in one day that Man had done since he appeared!

Where do they get these figures from?

We're all doomed I tell yeah!

To clarify your quote IMO; Man is unlikely to "destroy" the world.
Our planet Earth has survived for million's of years with much worse catastrophies thrown at it.

Mankind as we know it may well be destroyed, but not the world.
It may take eon's, but it will recover.
