ASSISTED SUICIDE

I see the House of Lords are voting on an amendment to the suicide act of 1961.  Basically to allow people with terminal illnesses to be assisted to go to places like Switzerland where it is legal.  This would take away the fear of possible prosecution of the relatives.  The thing is out of the 115 Brits who have already gone to Switzerland there have been no prosecutions anyway.
I don't particularly agree with assisted suicide as it could leave the vulnerable open to abuse and coercion.  I guess it is a complex issue but worthy of more debate before any laws are changed.

IMO there should be no debate or discussion about this issue whatsoever. If for any reason any human being requests that his or hers pain threshold is becoming too much to bear and wants the ultimate relief from it, then they should be entitled to end it all without a hearing, debate or quarrel. We all have the right to choose- so why must suicide or assisted suicide be so big a problem?
Those so called upright do-gooders against this, are anything but!

Yes but life is a gift and can't be thrown away without Question.  If there were no laws or concerns it would be morally wrong.  My opinion and quite willing to hear others.

Perhaps. But life as a gift should also be recognised as a death by choice to the individual surely. Laws should not be an issue here.

I'm with Ricky on this one, it could be open to abuse, say if the person is terminally ill and has Alzheimers or memory loss etc ....
BoB

I have to say that I have seen people suffer needlessly when I was told they were going to die anyway without doubt.
Yes they died within a few days and in a lot of pain and no doubt suffering wandering when they were going to die.
Sorry folks, but a few people have asked me to turn up the drip feed that would have killed then anyway, but I have went to the doctor and asked them to speed it up and been told that it should be as decided by ALL the Doctors dealing with the person.
They said they would ALL agree with assisted death but the law didn't allow it!!
It would be far better if they were allowed to go with their dignity intact.
I think assisted suicide should be allowed as long as it is done with full permissions.
I personally would go with someone who wanted to die to a clinic abroad that would help.
Oh, I agree that life is precious, but why should people suffer unnecessarily?

It is done all the time according to a doctor in a hospital, but they at the moment have to hide it and if the patient is suffering when people arrive it can't be done as it would be seen.
My own aunt was assisted by turning up the drip feed, but the doctors have to say it was not done, she was going to die in a lot of pain due to cancer, but when the pain grew to the point where she could not suffer it anymore they decided to end it.
No one complained as they all knew she had seen everyone she wanted to and that she did not need to suffer beyond what she already had.
She was my aunt and confidant, and I always respected her, even in death.

I hope she is in a better place now.

I had a similar situation with my father BoB.  We were told that IF he survived the night, he would be a vegetable.  We said we didn't want that.  We went away, and were no sooner home than the phone rang.
"We're sorry to inform you your father passed away peacefully 15 minutes ago...."
Wee John

BoB eh agree wae you a hundred percent on what you said about your Aunt.
My Father-in-law went threw the cancer torture 20year ago I told the Dr to give him something stronger (he was physically standing up in the hospital bed, tubes hanging from him, climbing the corner wall) Dr said I can only give him Morphine, but he might get a blockage that could kill him.
I authorized giving him the drug and he passed away 5 hrs later, and I have no regrets.

My father last May (2008) had lung cancer (he had lived with us for 16year) that ate two of his ribs and got into his brain turning him into a vegetable.
He was fortunate that it had eaten the nerves or what ever that tells you that you are in pain but you could still see he was still feeling some pain and I told Dr if he thought my Dad needed morphine to give it to him.
Well next day I got the call to come to hospital ASAP as he was going.
We made it with 10mins to spare and Dr told me he had to give him the drug.

Long story but my point is when it gets bad it is done today, no need to make it legal.
I think to make it legal it would be abused, people that are depressed etc, ..........well you get what I mean.

Do not make it legal.

I agree with what you say Bob, it is terrible to watch someone suffer, I had to let my dear dog go to the vet early on in his cancer as he did not deserve to suffer, I think as long as the person affected is in agreement or there is no hope then so be it, Amen

Yip BoB, it IS done , but it's one of those things, that must stay quiet.
I agree, do not legalize it, just let things be as they are.
Anyone with depression can do it themselves, and not be selfish enough,
to ask someone else to help them.

Callous maybe, but that's life.
rickyross3359

Its also a fact that old people who go into hospital are often starved and food is withdrawn as a way to just let them go.
rickyross3359

so that should read "its also a FACT"
